CONGRATULATIONS

Maury B. Reiter, managing principal and member of the Tax & Estates and Corporate & Business Plannning groups, has been reelected to another term as Treasurer of Volunteers of America, Inc.  VOA is a national nonprofit social services organization with annual revenues in excess of $800 million.  VOA provides community-level human service programs to assist abused and neglected children, youths at risk, the frail elderly, people with disabilities, offenders and homeless individuals, as well as housing and health services to the elderly and poor.  Mr. Reiter has been involved with VOA at the local and national levels for the past 11 years.

Robert A. Korn, a principal and member of the Construction & Surety Law and Commercial Litigation groups has been appointed Vice Chair of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee of the American Bar Association.  The Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee is concerned with developments and optimum use of all forms of alternative dispute resolution, including arbitration, mediation, summary jury trials, mini-trials, early neutral evaluation, as well as effective settlement and negotiation techniques.

Adelaine F. Williams, MBA, Kaplin Stewart's Director of Administration, has been elected to the position of President-Elect of the Independence Chapter of the Association of Legal Administrators (ALA). She has been a member of ALA for 11 years and has served as Community Challenge Chair for the chapter. Ms. Williams has been in law firm administration for 20 years. She oversees all firm administration, including HR, accounting and technology.

Amee S. Farrell, a member of the Land Use, Zoning & Development group, has been appointed to the Cheltenham Township (Pennsylvania) Planning Commission.

Deborah L. Arbuckle, a paralegal in the Land Use, Zoning & Development group, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Montgomery County Paralegal Association for a 2 year term.

Joshua C. Quinter was recently selected as a Pennsylvania "Lawyer on the Fast Track" by American Lawyer Media. Forty young lawyers in Pennsylvania are selected for this distinction by an objective judging panel. The nominees are judged on their determination in their professional, personal and civic lives to improve the legal landscape and the future of others. Josh is an associate in the Construction and Surety Law and Commercial Litigation groups.

Andrew B. Cohn, a principle in the Construction & Surety Law and Commercial Litigation groups, has been named to the National Board of Directors of the Nonprofit Finance Fund (NFF). He also serves as chair of NFF's Greater Philadelphia and New Jersey Advisory Board, and of its Loan Committee. NFF, one of the nation's leading community development financial institutions, helps nonprofit organizations strengthen their financial health and improve their capacity to serve their communities with loans, grants, and financial consulting. During its tenure, NFF has lent over $160 million and leveraged $1 billion of capital investment on behalf of its nonprofit clients.

ATTORNEY NEWS

Sandhya M. Feltes, a principal in the Construction & Surety Law and Commercial Litigation groups, recently participated in a roundtable event hosted by The Legal Intelligencer and The Pennsylvania Law Weekly publications. The roundtable discussion touched on issues regarding women in the legal profession, such as the recruitment and retention of female lawyers, gender equality issues and challenges faced by women in law firms.

SEMINARS

Kimberly L. Russell, a principal in the Business & Commercial Litigation group, will be presenting two seminars in October, 2008 on "Employment Law from the Employer's Chair" for Mid Atlantic BX, a builders exchange group serving the construction industry.  The seminars will focus on personnel manuals, fitness for duty policies, alchohol and drug testing policies, the new Wage and Hour Regulations and Department of Labor compliance, and termination of employees.  For a free employers guide "Employment Law Meets Risk Management:  Guide for Successful Employee Termination"  contact Ms. Russell at krussell@kaplaw.com or call her at 610-941-2541.

William J. Levant, a principal in the Business & Commercial Litigation and Bankruptcy/Creditors Rights groups, led a Lorman Education Seminar entitled "Judgment Enforcement in Pennsylvania" on August 5, 2008 in Philadelphia, PA. The seminar focused on how to successfully collect debts where others have failed.

Maury B. Reiter, a principle in the Corporate & Business Planning and Real Estate Business & Finance groups, was a presenter, along with radio host Jay Lamont, at a Pennsylvania Bar Institute seminar on August 20, 2008 entitled "Buying a Vacation House".  The seminar covered practical and legal considerations, the current real estate market, financing and accounting, insurance and the Vacation House Tax Survival Guide. 

Robert A. Korn and Joshua C. Quinter, of the Construction & Surety Law and Business & Commercial Litigation groups, presented a program on the "New AIA Cntracts" for the Construction Financial Management Association, Greater Berks-Lehigh Valley PA Chapter.  The presentation focused on specific issues that should be addressed in writing good contracts -- what language should be included and what language should be excluded. 

Joshua C. Quinter, a member of the Construction & Surety Law and Business & Commercial Litigation groups, recently participated in a panel discussion at a joint meeting of the Lehigh Valley Chapters of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Pennsylvania Society of Land Surveyors. The panel discussed liability and professional responsibility, issues affecting surveyors and engineers. Mr. Quinter spoke about how entities allocate risk contractually and protect themselves legally.   Mr. Quinter also presented a program to members of the Metal Building Contractors & Erectors Association where he addressed a variety of construction-related topics including lien claims, surety bonds, indemnification and insurance clauses, workers' compensation liability and the new AIA Contracts.
