Barry A. Furman is a principal of the firm. For the last 26 years, he has counseled a wide range of business clients regarding healthcare, tax, corporate, employment and real estate law in matters such as entity formation, business structuring, acquisitions, financing, licensing, regulatory issues, contract negotiations and estate planning.

Prior to joining Kaplin Stewart, Mr. Furman served as senior trial attorney in the National Office of the Chief Counsel's Office of the Internal Revenue Service. As such, he represented the Commissioner of Internal Revenue in many cases in the United States Tax Court and in many highly visible and sensitive matters such as enforcement of the nondiscrimination policy for tax-exempt private schools.  That experience has been a great benefit in representing clients in tax controversies before the Appeals Office of the IRS and in the United States Tax Court, United States District Courts and the United States Claims Court.  Mr. Furman was one of the first, if not the first, attorney to successfully challenge the IRS' attempted reclassification of nurses engaged as independent contractors.  Following that victory, Mr. Furman obtained a jury verdict rejecting the IRS' attempted reclassification of approximately 6,000 product inspectors in the aerodynamics and defense industries who were treated as independent contractors.

Mr. Furman's clients are from numerous industries with a good number coming from the health care sector. Mr. Furman has represented supplemental staffing companies, home health care agencies, medical practices, dental practices and technology companies, among others, in acquisitions and has structured the transactions to obtain the most favorable tax consequences for his clients.

Over the course of his career, Mr. Furman has been gratified to have been acknowledged for his work in government and on behalf of area businesses. While at the IRS, Mr. Furman was awarded several merit awards by the Chief Counsel of the IRS. In private practice, he was recognized by the Philadelphia Business Journal as a Leader in Law.  Mr. Furman is an active public speaker and has spoken before the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants, the Hospital Association of Pennsylvania, the Healthcare Financial Management Association and the Philadelphia and Suburban Hospital Human Resources Association, the Greater Philadelphia Senior Executive Group, among others and has been published in numerous periodicals.
